Skylight Specialist in Edmonton | The Truth About Skylights
Welcome to Alberta Skylights YouTube channel! My name is Trevor, and I’m here with Ryan, the owner and operator of Alberta Skylights. Ryan is a Velux skylight specialist in Edmonton who works with skylights and Sun Tunnels. Today, we’re talking about Ryan’s journey, the challenges homeowners face with skylights, and how his expertise can help.
How It All Began
Trevor: Ryan, tell us your story. How did you get started with skylights?
Ryan: I started about 10 to 12 years ago. I met a Velux representative at a roofing conference, and we hit it off. He convinced me to transition from my roofing background into skylights. That’s when I realized how specialized the skylight industry is and how poorly roofers typically handle them.
Trevor: How long were you in roofing before that?
Ryan: I started roofing in 1999, launched my roofing company in 2005, and have been focused on skylights consistently since around 2012.
Common Skylight Issues
Trevor: What are some common issues you see with skylights?
Ryan: We handle a mix of new installations, or what we call “new cut” skylights, and replacements.
- Improper Reinstallation by Roofers:
Many roofers don’t know how to reinstall skylights properly after replacing a roof. They often cut corners or botch the job, leading to leaks. Then, they claim, “skylights always leak.” - Old Acrylic Skylights:
These are the big plastic bubble skylights. They crack, break, and are extremely inefficient. We replace almost all of these with glass skylights.
Why Glass Skylights Are Better
Trevor: Let’s talk about the upgrades you offer. What’s the process of replacing those old bubble skylights?
Ryan: When we replace plastic skylights, we:
- Remove the old skylight.
- Waterproof the area.
- Install custom-fit flashings.
- Upgrade to a high-quality glass skylight with dual-pane, Triple Low-E coating, and argon filling.
This isn’t just a replacement—it’s a significant upgrade. Glass skylights are stronger, more energy-efficient, and easier to clean.
Concerns About Hail
Trevor: Some homeowners worry about hail damage. How do your skylights hold up?
Ryan: Velux skylights come with a 10-year hail breakage warranty. The outer pane is tempered glass, which is incredibly strong, and the inner pane is laminated. Even if the outer pane breaks, the inner pane holds everything together, similar to a car windshield. Acrylic skylights, on the other hand, crack and degrade even without hail.
The Benefits of Sun Tunnels
Trevor: What about Sun Tunnels? Where do they work best?
Ryan: Sun Tunnels are tubular skylights that are perfect for small, enclosed spaces like:
- Bathrooms
- Pantries
- Hallways
We usually install the 14-inch version, which works great in residential spaces. They’re quick to install—typically about three hours—and can transform a room.
Trevor: That sounds like a great way to bring natural light into darker areas.
Ryan: Absolutely. Sun Tunnels are what really sparked my passion for this business. The reaction from homeowners when their once-dark space is filled with natural light is incredibly rewarding.
Real Stories: Solving Skylight Problems
Trevor: Can you share a memorable story about solving a skylight problem?
Ryan: Sure. Last fall, we worked on a home where the skylight had been leaking for 10 years. The homeowner had a metal roof, and nobody could figure out the issue. When we inspected the attic, we found that the skylight well wasn’t insulated. This created a convection loop, causing condensation and constant leaks.
Trevor: So the skylight itself wasn’t the problem?
Ryan: Exactly. Once we insulated the skylight well, the problem was solved.
